Here they are, in the beginning. Al was honestly a hard worker, patiently wanting to put only perfect berries in our boxes. Gigi was more interested in tasting each berry she found. I guess you could call her our QA girl…but she did pick some that didn’t get eaten right away.

At the Farm

We finally saw some sunshine! I was determined to take the kids strawberry picking this year, and we made it. We found a lovely, small and non-commercialized farm about 35 minutes from home. It was a pretty drive and the kids and I had a memorable time picking (and eating!) some tiny, sweet berries. We took home 9 pounds of berries. Most we devoured within a few days and I managed to save a small bag full for freezing.

The first official week of summer break wasn’t so summery. Yet, we were determined to get moving and enjoy the outdoors, despite a drizzly and cool end of June. One morning I took the kids on a hike led by a small group from our local YMCA to an area we’d never trekked through. The Mercer Slough includes a blueberry farm and here you can see the blueberry fields in the background. We never made it back to pick the berries later in the summer, but maybe next year. The day we hiked we discovered that a wetland area can indeeed be quite buggy, so I was glad we all were well-covered and we managed to make it home with little or no bites. We took a long hike that day, and to their credit, Al and Gigi were troopers. Once we were home early that afternoon, they both ate hearty lunches (at least I had packed some snacks that morning!) and earned some well-deserved downtime. Enjoy the pictures!

After the first portion of our hike, we made it to the Environmentral Education Center for a little break. We then hiked back to the other end of the park to reach our car. Although it was a fun morning overall, I think we’d rather not revisit just how long that hike took us!
